What is SPF?

SPF (Sender Policy Framework) is a DNS TXT record that lists the servers allowed to send email on behalf of your domain.

Why businesses care

It gives receiving servers a published list to check, which reduces forged mail and helps your legitimate email avoid spam folders.

Example

v=spf1 include:_spf.google.com -all

How to check

Look up TXT records on your root domain for one beginning v=spf1, or run the SPF checker.

How to fix

Publish exactly one SPF record that includes every service that sends as you and ends with -all (or ~all while testing).

Common mistakes

  • Two SPF records
  • Ending with +all
  • Exceeding the 10-DNS-lookup limit with many includes
  • Forgetting a sender such as your invoicing tool
