What is Data exposure?

Data exposure means files or information that should be private, such as environment files, database dumps, backups or source repositories, are reachable by anyone on the internet.

Why businesses care

Exposed configuration files often contain passwords and API keys. Attackers scan for these files automatically, so an exposed file is usually found within hours.

Example

https://example.com/.env returning DB_PASSWORD=… instead of a 404 page.

How to check

Request the common sensitive paths on your own domain, or run the PixelPrivate security check, which looks for them without storing their contents.

How to fix

Remove the file from the web root, block the path in your web server configuration, and rotate any secret that was exposed, because it should be treated as compromised.

Common mistakes

  • Deleting the file but not rotating the secrets in it
  • Leaving old backups in the web root

Check it with Security Check
